I Thought Digital Marketing Was Just Posting Videos…Here’s What It Really Taught Me.

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Digital marketing? Isn’t that just people recording videos and posting them
online?” That was honestly my first thought. As someone who is naturally camera
shy and struggles with social anxiety, I never imagined myself studying digital
marketing. I thought it meant constantly showing my face on social media,
something I had always avoided.
Looking back now, I realize I couldn’t have been more wrong.
A Conversation
That Changed My
Future
My journey into
digital marketing
began with a
simple
conversation about
my future with
some close to me.
At the time, I had
planned to return to school when I turned 25 because I believed I needed more time
before continuing my education. During that conversation, several options were
mentioned, including teaching, digital marketing, logistics and a few others.
I decided to do research. Digital marketing stood out It seemed practical, flexible,
and full of possibilities.
Within just one month, I had found a school, saved enough money to pay for my
certificate course, purchased a laptop for my studies, and selected the batch I
wanted to join. Everything was finally coming together. Even though I had
completed all the preparations, one thing still held me back and that’s fear.
Why I Chose Digital Marketing.
Living and working in Dubai has taught me that different industries have different
hiring seasons. As a barista, I have seen how the hospitality industry slows down
during the hot summer months. Some cafés reduce hiring, while others even close
temporarily because fewer people spend time outdoors.
Digital marketing, however, is different.
Businesses need customers throughout the year, regardless of the
season.Companies still need websites, social media management, advertising,
customer engagement, and online marketing strategies to help their businesses
grow.
That realization gave me confidence that digital marketing could offer long term
career opportunities. I also liked that I could begin with a certificate while working
full time and later continue my education on by pursuing a diploma and eventually
a degree.
It felt like a career that matched both my current situation and my future goals.
My Biggest Fear Wasn’t the Course, It
Was Being Seen
Before starting my classes, I believed that every digital marketer had to become a
content creator who constantly appeared in front of a camera. That idea terrified
me.
I enjoy scrolling through social media, but posting about myself has never been
easy.
Whenever I upload something, I often overthink it and sometimes even delete it
afterward. The thought of putting myself on the internet made me uncomfortable,
and I almost allowed that fear to stop me from pursuing something I genuinely
wanted to learn.
Fortunately, I decided to ask questions instead of relying on assumptions. During
my visit to the school, my instructors explained that digital marketing is much
broader than simply creating videos. They told me that many successful digital
marketers work entirely behind the scenes. Some write content, manage websites,
run online advertisements, analyze marketing data, or create email campaigns
without ever showing their faces online.
Hearing that completely changed my perspective.
Discovering What Digital Marketing
Really Means
As I continued learning, I
realized that digital
marketing is about
helping businesses
communicate with people
in meaningful ways.
It is about understanding
customers, creating
valuable content, building
trust, and helping
businesses grow online.
I also discovered that
digital marketing offers
many different career
paths. Some professionals specialize in social media management, while others
focus on content writing, search engine optimization (SEO), website management,
paid advertising, graphic design, or email marketing.
Knowing this removed much of the fear I had carried for so long. Although I still
get nervous sometimes, I slowly started posting on LinkedIn and Instagram. Each
post has become another small step toward building confidence.
My Barista Experience Helped Me
Understand Marketing
Working as a barista has also helped me appreciate the role of digital marketing in
a completely different way.
Behind every attractive drink photo on Instagram, promotion, customer review,
and beautifully designed menu is someone working to connect that business with
its customers.
Digital marketers help tell the story behind every cup, explain the ingredients,
showcase new products, and encourage customers to visit.
A Lesson I’II Always Remember.
Looking back, I am grateful that I chose to research instead of making
assumptions. If I had allowed fear to make the decision for me, I might never have
discovered a career that truly matches my interests and future goals.
I am also grateful that I was open to guidance. If I hadn’t listened to my
boyfriend’s advice and taken the time to think through the options he gave me, I
probably wouldn’t have chosen digital marketing.
Sometimes we need to listen to people who genuinely care about us and have
knowledge or experience we can learn from. Listening, understanding, and then
taking action can open doors we never imagined.
Today, I see digital marketing differently. It is not simply about posting videos or
becoming famous online. It is about creativity, communication, problem solving,
and helping businesses grow in a digital world.
I am still learning, building confidence, having moments when I feel nervous about
posting online. But every assignment I complete and every new skill I learn
reminds me that growth happens one step at a time.
If there is one lesson I would share with anyone considering a new career, it is this;
don’t let assumptions stop you. Take time to research, ask questions, and choose a
path that aligns with your passion and goals. The longer we let fear make our
decisions, the more opportunities we may miss. And still the longer you take to do
something, the less likely you’re to do it.
For me, choosing digital marketing was morethan choosing a course ,it was
choosing to believe in my future. As our world becomes increasingly digital, I
believe digital marketing is not just a valuable skill but a gateway to endless
opportunities. Whether you dream of working for a company, becoming self
employed, or building your own brand, digital marketing can help you create a
future filled with possibilities. Sometimes, the first step toward a better future is
simply having the courage to begin.
